Peak's Debris Breaker Reduces Descaling Time by 75%

Specialist downhole tool provider, Peak Well Systems, has followed up the initial field trials of its 4 ½" Torque Action Debris Breaker with a smaller version designed for 2 7/8" - 4 ½" tubing where the build-up of scale reduces productivity. In its first deployment with international service provider SGS Australia, the tool significantly reduced intervention time by over one-and-a-half days on one well, allowing production to resume faster than ever before.

The 2 7/8" version of the Impact-Driven Torque Action Debris Breaker has been used by SGS Australia to deploy on behalf of a major oil and gas company. Development and deployment of the new size follows the successful relationship forged with SGS as a result of Peak's supply of all toolstrings required for the whole project.

To date, the Torque Action Debris Breaker has been used in 2 7/8" tubing and the results are already far exceeding expectations on site. Stuart Taylor, Operations Manager for SGS, commented: "We used Peak's Torque Action Debris Breaker on a problem well and it has proven to be a complete success. The programme of scale removal usually takes two full days but with this tool, the tubing was opened up within six hours."

Whilst there are other options for descaling available on the market, it was the simplicity and robustness of Peak tools which were major factors in SGS's decision to try the Torque Action Debris Breaker. The tool is jarred down mechanically in the well, and its corkscrew design causes it to twist and break the solids build-up. The main tool is designed to fit a 2 7/8" - 4 ½" well and comes with a number of different sizes of shoes which can be easily changed on the main body of the tool as the scale is broken down, until it is removed completely. In addition, the considerable benefits include:

  • Less inventory of tools required, as the Torque Action Debris Breaker comes with different shoe sizes that are changed out on the same main tool body, thus eliminating the need to change the tools being run
  • No other specialist tools required
  • Overall reduction in time required for descaling, thus reducing intervention time and costs
  • Production can resume much faster than ever before using alternative methods of descaling.

Peak's Torque Action Debris Breaker has demonstrated that it can generate exceptional results compared to other descaling alternatives such as mechanical, chemical or sonic break-down. SGS also commended Peak Well Systems for their technical support and accessibility for discussing operational issues and engineering solutions.
